The newly opened Within The Walls Dessert Bar in East Coast is a fantastic supper spot for those in the area. This retro, 80s-inspired venue offers a variety of traditional Chinese desserts, all while immersing patrons in an atmosphere reminiscent of Kowloon, Hong Kong, in the 1980s. To beat the heat, their Steady Pom Pi Pi Strawberry is highly recommended, striking a perfect balance of tangy and sweet with its combination of strawberry snow ice, fresh strawberries, and a dollop of yoghurt. Notably, real fruits are used in most of their snow ice desserts, ensuring fresh and authentic flavours.
Adding to the charm of Within The Walls Dessert Bar is its nostalgic connection to the Kowloon Walled City, an area that was densely populated and controlled by triads in the 1980s before its demolition. Henry Mok, the father of the bar’s owner, Maverick Mok, has personal ties to this historical site. Henry recalls his early teen visits to his aunt in the Walled City, where he experienced the densely packed enclaves and formed lasting friendships. This nostalgia, along with his aunt’s traditional dessert recipes, inspired the creation of Within The Walls, featuring delights such as steamed egg pudding and sesame paste.
Within The Walls offers more than just desserts; it also serves beer and whiskey, creating a unique dessert bar experience. Maverick Mok, with a background in marketing and a successful track record with Food Haus in Ang Mo Kio, handles the daily operations, while Henry remains an enthusiastic supporter. Henry organized a light-up block party for the launch and continues to arrange live band performances every Friday and Saturday evening, adding to the vibrant and lively atmosphere of this new dessert bar.
