Seven new Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) MRT stations have officially opened, marking a significant milestone in Singapore’s public transport development. While many have their gripes about Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) network, it is widely regarded as the second-best public transport system in Asia. Singapore’s MRT network has evolved from having just one or two main lines connecting limited areas to a complex web of stations that even locals sometimes find challenging to navigate.
Since 2020, the highly-anticipated TEL, also known as the ‘brown line,’ has been opening in various phases. Currently in its third stage, the TEL stretches from Woodlands North to Gardens by the Bay. The recent opening of seven new stations as part of the fourth phase marks a significant expansion. These new stations are Tanjong Rhu, Katong Park, Tanjong Katong, Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Siglap, and Bayshore. With these additions, the TEL is over 90 percent complete. The final stage will include Founders’ Memorial station, Bedok South, and Sungei Bedok stations, which are expected to open in 2025.
In celebration of the new TEL stations, a public preview is being held with free MRT rides available until 9pm today. Train enthusiasts and the general public can explore the newly opened stations, enjoy games and family-friendly activities, and participate in challenges to win exclusive prizes. Additionally, visitors can experience a train simulator at Marine Parade MRT station and view a showcase of train-themed memorabilia. Merchandise featuring SMRT’s Thoughtful Bunch mascots will also be available, adding to the festive atmosphere surrounding the TEL’s expansion.
