Singapore has reached a new milestone in its food production journey with the launch of the nation’s first rainbow trout farm. Developed by Blue Aqua International in Lim Chu Kang, the high-tech, land-based facility introduces a species traditionally farmed in colder regions such as Europe and North America, demonstrating how advanced aquaculture technology can make local production possible even in a tropical climate. The opening represents a significant step towards strengthening Singapore’s food resilience while diversifying the range of seafood produced locally.
Spanning 1.6 hectares, the facility is expected to produce 1,200 tonnes of rainbow trout annually in its initial phase, with plans to increase capacity to 3,000 tonnes per year by 2028. To recreate the cold, pristine conditions required for trout farming, the operation relies on a sophisticated recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), which continuously filters, cools, disinfects, and reuses water within a tightly controlled environment. This technology enables year-round production while maintaining optimal water quality, temperature, oxygen levels, and biosecurity standards, regardless of external weather conditions.
Beyond introducing a premium fish species to Singapore’s agricultural landscape, the new farm highlights the growing role of innovation in sustainable food production. Rainbow trout, prized for its delicate flavour, high protein content, and Omega-3 richness, offers consumers a fresher locally produced alternative to imported seafood. With significant investment in infrastructure and a long-term vision that includes regional export opportunities, Blue Aqua International’s latest venture signals continued confidence in the future of Singapore’s aquaculture sector and its ambitions to build a more resilient food ecosystem.
