Round and Round Gallery has moved from its snug two-unit home at Pearl’s Hill Terrace to a new 130 sq m space in Joo Chiat, giving the Singapore gallery three times more room to stage exhibitions and present its collection of handcrafted ceramics, glass and teaware. Founded in March 2024 by architects-turned-curators Deng Chao, 33, and Gu Tiantong, 32, the gallery works with artists from China, Japan and Singapore through rotating exhibitions and a selection of homeware and teaware. The larger space is designed to function as both an exhibition venue and living room, allowing the founders to experiment with installations while maintaining the gallery’s emphasis on slow living and thoughtful engagement with craft.
Joo Chiat was chosen for its lifestyle-oriented community, with the founders also having considered Tiong Bahru. The gallery marked its reopening with The Fire Within, a solo exhibition by Kochi-based Japanese ceramicist Teppei Ono, held from August 27 to 30. Known for treating clay and fire as part of his broader artistic practice and way of life, Ono also joined around 10 ceramic, glass and craft artists from Singapore and the region for a two-day Round Table discussion. The programme reflects Round and Round’s interest in creating opportunities not only to view craft, but also to encourage conversations and connections between makers.
More exhibitions and collaborations are planned through the end of the year. September will bring a solo show by ceramic artist Junichiro Hayashi alongside a handmade clothing pop-up, followed by a collaboration with a local nursery exploring the relationship between caudex plants, craft and everyday objects. In October, the gallery will work with Design Shanghai to introduce works by individual designers to Singapore, before presenting wool-felt artist Aki’s work later in the year. Across these projects, Round and Round continues to blur the boundaries between art, craft and everyday life, with the new Joo Chiat space offering more room for visitors to browse, linger and engage with the work at their own pace.
