Malay Heritage Centre reopens its revamped permanent galleries on April 25, following a multi-year restoration that began in 2022. Set within the historic former palace at Kampong Gelam, the refreshed spaces introduce a more expansive and layered exploration of Malay identity, encouraging visitors to reflect on how heritage is inherited, interpreted, and reshaped across generations.
Anchored by the narrative Dari Rantau Ke Rumah (“From the Region to Home”), the galleries trace the evolution of Malay communities in Singapore through movement, exchange, and connections across the wider Nusantara. The обновed displays broaden representation with deeper coverage of sub-ethnic groups, cultural practices, and personal histories, alongside a stronger focus on the contributions and evolving roles of Malay women. Artefacts, textiles, and multimedia elements come together to present heritage as something living—continuously shaped by both tradition and reinvention.
Art installations play a key role in this reimagining, including contemporary interpretations like the wayang kulit-inspired works by Tumadi Patri. These pieces sit alongside historical objects to create dialogue between past and present, offering multiple ways of engaging with the material. The reopening is accompanied by a nine-day festival featuring performances, exhibitions, and community programmes, bringing together artists and practitioners from across the Malay world to celebrate the diversity and continuity of the culture.
