Japanese handroll fans have a new destination to explore with the opening of Rolls Handroll Izakaya at Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre. Built around a 16-seat curved counter, the intimate concept places diners right in front of the action as each handroll is prepared to order. Combining the warmth of a traditional izakaya with clean contemporary interiors, the space offers a modern take on Japan’s handroll culture, where craftsmanship and the dining experience take centre stage.
Leading the kitchen are Chefs Max and Raymond, whose experience includes Singapore’s acclaimed omakase restaurant Hiryu. Lunch features an approachable $28 set with a choice of six sashimi varieties, including salmon, tuna, hamachi and engawa, while the six-piece handroll set ($38) showcases freshly assembled rolls designed to be enjoyed immediately. Beyond the signature handrolls, diners can also order dishes such as sesame ponzu tai carpaccio, okonomiyaki, salmon mini don ($6.80), and a chirashi bowl topped with eight varieties of sashimi ($19.80).
Designed for both quick lunches and relaxed evening dining, Rolls Izakaya delivers an experience that balances precision, quality and accessibility. With its chef-led counter seating, carefully curated menu and contemporary interpretation of a Japanese favourite, the new handroll bar adds another noteworthy dining destination to Singapore’s growing Japanese culinary scene.
