Starting from 2028, Alexandra Hospital in Queenstown will undergo a major transformation to expand from its current 300-bed capacity to approximately 1,300 beds. This expansion will include the addition of two new high-rise buildings and other significant upgrades. The redevelopment, announced by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on May 15, coincides with the long-term redevelopment of the National University Hospital (NUH) campus, which will start in 2025 and span over a decade.
These projects are part of the government’s broader strategy to increase hospital capacity to address growing healthcare demands. Recently, construction began for the Eastern General Hospital in Bedok North, which will have 1,400 beds. Alexandra Hospital, originally built in 1938 as the British Military Hospital Singapore, will feature a new pandemic-ready emergency department connected to the intensive care unit and operating theatre, enhancing its ability to handle emergencies.
The redeveloped Alexandra Hospital will also include hospice and psychiatric care beds among its 1,300 beds. Public ambulances will transport patients from the vicinity to its new emergency department, replacing the current 24-hour urgent care center. Additionally, a separate building on the campus will house a 400-bed nursing home to better serve Queenstown’s elderly population, with one in four residents aged 65 and above.
Throughout its redevelopment, Alexandra Hospital will remain operational as part of the National University Health System (NUHS), one of Singapore’s three public healthcare clusters. NUH, the main emergency and trauma care hospital for the western region, will also undergo extensive redevelopment. Its buildings, 40 to 50 years old, will be upgraded to meet evolving healthcare needs, increase capacity, optimize land use, and improve the road network, with work commencing in 2025 and continuing for over a decade.
