Obongzip has opened its first Singapore outpost in Tanjong Pagar, bringing with it a legacy spanning nearly four decades and hundreds of outlets across Asia and beyond. Known for its bold, spice-forward flavours, the restaurant has quickly drawn attention for its signature stir-fried octopus—served sizzling, smoky, and coated in a deep red sauce that delivers a steady, lingering heat. Set within the city’s unofficial Korea Town, the space offers a lively, no-frills setting that fills up quickly during peak hours.
At the heart of the menu is the fiery octopus dish, prepared whole and cut tableside before being tossed with cabbage and house sauce. The texture strikes a balance between tender and pleasantly chewy, allowing the flavours to fully come through. Alongside it comes a spread of classic banchan, offering contrast and relief from the intensity of the main dish. Another standout is the pork belly bossam, featuring soft, clean slices meant to be wrapped with kimchi for a rich yet balanced bite—an enduring pairing that complements the restaurant’s robust flavour profile.
The menu extends beyond its signatures with additions like tangy buckwheat noodles and a striking grilled tteok, served as a large, shareable dessert with a crisp exterior and chewy centre. While the flavours lean bold and indulgent, the overall experience remains approachable and fuss-free. Obongzip stands out for carving a niche around spicy octopus in Singapore’s dining scene, offering something distinct from the usual Korean grill and noodle staples while staying true to its roots.
