Of the many Korean names that have quietly built a following in Singapore, Um Yong Baek stands out for its deep-rooted dedication to tradition. Since opening its first Singapore outpost in 2022, the Busan-born eatery has grown a loyal audience around Telok Ayer—and now expands its story with Joong San, a second concept located just across from the original Boon Tat Street branch.
By day, Joong San leans into comforting Korean classics done with care. Expect freshly made sundubu jjigae served with nangpun bapsang—a thoughtful spread of rice, bean sprouts and seasoned laver meant to be mixed and shared—alongside crispy mung bean pancakes and fragrant soon memilguksu, where bouncy buckwheat noodles are layered with perilla oil and powder for a nutty, savoury finish. Each dish reflects the brand’s belief in honest cooking and the warmth of everyday Korean meals.
Come evening, the space transforms into a Korean-style beef barbecue restaurant, centred on premium cuts grilled over charcoal. Highlights include beef tongue, cubed ribeye, tenderloin, thick-cut short ribs and the crowd-favourite Andong-style marinated galbi, known for its rich, garlicky depth. Rooted in communal dining traditions like Nangpun Bapsang, Pumasi and Dure, Joong San presents Korean dining culture in its most heartfelt form—unpretentious, carefully crafted, and best enjoyed together.
