After nearly four decades of serving generations of loyal diners from its renowned Tiong Bahru Market stall, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice has expanded into its first full-service restaurant concept at Takashimaya Shopping Centre, bringing its heritage flavours into a more elevated dine-in setting in the heart of Orchard Road.
What began in 1987 at a humble corner in Lengkok Bahru, before finding its home at Tiong Bahru Market, has grown into one of Singapore’s most recognised chicken rice names, built on generations of loyal diners, heartfelt cooking and a belief that good food should remain simple, sincere and accessible. Now at Takashimaya, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice expands beyond its hawker roots with a wider dine-in experience that continues to honour tradition, while introducing a more elevated and thoughtful way of enjoying one of Singapore’s most iconic dishes.
The 76-seater Takashimaya outlet marks the brand’s first and only full-service restaurant, offering a more elevated dine-in experience alongside several exclusive menu offerings. A key highlight is the introduction of three premium rice varieties, available only at the Takashimaya flagship.

For the first time, diners can personalise their chicken rice experience with a choice of three distinct rice varieties, each thoughtfully selected to suit different tastes and dining preferences. Choose from the classic Signature Fragrant Chicken Rice, cooked in rich chicken stock for the familiar flavour that has won over generations of diners; Fragrant Basmati Rice, a lighter, lower-GI alternative with a delicate aroma; or premium Fragrant Niigata Koshihikari Rice, a Japanese short-grain rice prized for its soft texture, natural sweetness and subtle umami finish. This unique offering reflects the brand’s commitment to elevating a beloved local staple while allowing diners to enjoy their chicken rice just the way they like it.
Beyond its signature poached and roasted chicken, the expanded menu showcases a wider selection of comforting local favourites and hearty sharing dishes designed for communal dining. Highlights include the Hainan Curry Fish Pot, indulgent Chilli Soft Shell Crab with Mantou, and Homemade Ngoh Hiang with Tiger Prawns, offering diners even more reasons to gather, share and explore beyond the brand’s iconic chicken rice.
While chicken rice remains at the heart of Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice, the kitchen now extends beyond a single signature with a thoughtfully expanded menu that brings together familiar local flavours prepared with the same care, technique and respect for tradition.
Signature favourites include the Hainanese Chicken Rice ($14) and Roasted Chicken Rice ($14), featuring tender poached chicken or crisp-skinned roasted chicken served with the brand’s signature sauces and fragrant rice. For sharing, diners can also enjoy the Hainanese Chicken and Roasted Chicken in Quarter Portions ($18/$20), Half Chicken ($30) or Whole Chicken ($50). Those looking to enjoy the best of both worlds can opt for the Classic Hainanese Combo Chicken Rice ($16), which pairs both poached and roasted chicken on a single plate. Begin the meal with comforting local small plates such as Homemade Ngoh Hiang with Tiger Prawns ($10), featuring crisp beancurd skin wrapped around minced pork, succulent tiger prawns and water chestnuts seasoned with aromatic five-spice powder, or the Hainanese Crispy Pork ($12), made using premium pork belly marinated in a special house recipe before being deep-fried to golden perfection. Crackling crisp on the outside yet succulent within, each bite delivers a savoury richness that makes it an irresistible crowd favourite. The Golden Salt & Pepper Whitebait ($12) offers a lighter alternative, flash-fried and tossed with garlic, chilli and fragrant seasoning.
Heartier mains include the Hainan Curry Fish Pot (from $38), featuring red snapper available as either fish head or fish tail, gently simmered in a velvety curry gravy infused with coconut milk and aromatic spices. Another standout perfect for sharing is the Baked French Poulet Served with Fragrant Japanese Rice ($60), featuring tender, oven-roasted chicken served alongside a fragrant Japanese rice that is a flavour-packed highlight in its own right. Tossed with spring onions and crispy chicken skin for added aroma and texture, the rice delivers rich savoury notes in every mouthful, making it an ideal centrepiece for groups of two to three diners.

Complementing these hearty favourites are dishes such as the Golden Cereal Prawn ($25), featuring succulent prawns coated in buttery cereal flakes and fragrant curry leaves, as well as the Sweet & Sour Sliced Red Snapper (from $16), a seafood twist on the restaurant’s popular sweet and sour pork, featuring lightly battered red snapper tossed in a tangy-sweet glaze. Vegetable dishes such as the Twin-Style Kailan ($15) balance the meal with a combination of crisp leaves and tender stems finished with a generous topping of savoury pork floss that adds an extra layer of flavour and texture to every bite.
Voracious eaters will delight in more carb dishes like Abundance Seafood Poached Rice ($25), where rice is slow-simmered in a rich pumpkin broth brimming with plump prawns, sweet scallops and fresh clams for a comforting bowl layered with flavour and texture. Satiate all noodle cravings with the Chicken Curry Laksa ($15), a comforting hawker classic featuring tender chicken and your choice of springy yellow noodles or thick vermicelli, served in a velvety coconut curry broth infused with aromatic spices and accompanied by tau pok that soaks up every drop of flavour.
Wrapping things up on a sweet note is dessert like Coconut Chendol Bliss ($8) a refreshing dessert loaded with silky pandan jelly, plump red beans and fragrant gula melaka layered beneath scoops of creamy coconut ice cream for the ultimate tropical bliss.
Coffee lovers can also round off their meal with a selection of specialty coffee from Common Man Coffee Roasters, with prices starting from $4.50. Beyond classic favourites, diners can personalise their hot latte with a custom edible photo printed directly onto the foam — a fun and memorable touch perfect for celebrations, special occasions, or simply creating a unique dining moment. As each latte is individually prepared and printed to order, guests are advised to allow up to 20 minutes for preparation.
Heritage Dining, Reimagined at Takashimaya
The 76-seater flagship outlet reinterprets the nostalgic charm of the iconic 1980s Tiong Bahru Market through a more contemporary dining environment. Drawing inspiration from retro hawker textures and Singapore’s heritage aesthetics, the space balances familiarity with understated refinement in the heart of Orchard Road.
Thoughtful design touches can be seen throughout the restaurant, from translucent glass blocks and avocado-green tiles to warm wood accents and clean geometric details that subtly nod to the retro character of old-school Singapore dining spaces. Booth seating and minimalist furnishings further soften the space, creating a clean, spacious and inviting environment that feels both contemporary and familiar.
The result is a comfortable full-service dining setting that reflects the brand’s heritage roots while offering diners a refreshed way to enjoy one of Singapore’s most beloved local classics.
