East-side café lovers have a new bakehouse to check out with the opening of Bean There Café, a new concept by local macaron brand Degree Celsius. Located along Telok Kurau, the café shifts the focus from delicate sweets to freshly baked bread, with shio pan — the buttery Japanese sea-salt roll — taking centre stage on the menu.
The bakery offers several variations of the addictive, golden-crusted bread, from the classic sea salt version to sweeter and savoury twists like strawberries & cream, mentaiko, kaya and ham & cheese. Each batch is baked fresh, giving the rolls their signature crisp exterior and soft, fluffy centre. While the shio pan is the main draw, the menu also includes other café staples, making the space an easy stop for breakfast, tea breaks or casual catch-ups.
Drinks lean towards specialty coffee and flavoured matcha, with options such as rose matcha latte and hazelnut praline latte alongside more familiar espresso-based choices. The cosy neighbourhood setting gives the café a relaxed, artisanal feel, adding another small but noteworthy bakery to the East Coast area for those willing to travel for good bread.
