Tanjong Katong Complex, a long-standing landmark in Geylang Serai, is set to undergo a major redevelopment and will reopen in 2029. The site’s 30-year lease was awarded by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) to Jun Jie Development, a subsidiary of Elegant Group, at a bid price of $90,000,888. Known for projects such as Grantral Mall @ Clementi and Changi City Point, Jun Jie Development emerged as the top choice among three submissions in a Concept and Price Revenue Tender launched in October 2024.
The selection process placed strong emphasis on preserving the complex’s historical and cultural significance, while delivering a development that meets modern needs. Jun Jie Development’s winning proposal was praised for its community-centric vision and sensitive approach to placemaking. It includes plans for a “community spine” that features a multipurpose rooftop deck, food garden, and various spaces for art and heritage installations. The design aims to retain the building’s architectural character while creating vibrant opportunities for community events such as creative markets, wellness programmes, and cultural showcases.
When completed, the new Tanjong Katong Complex will continue to serve as a central hub for the Malay-Muslim community and the wider public. The development will also house key institutions such as the new Yayasan Mendaki headquarters, a MUIS office, and the relocated Geylang East Public Library. Speaking at a community event, Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim highlighted the project’s goal of transforming the complex into a “community heartbeat,” where Malay heritage is honoured within a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
