The enhanced Sisters’ Islands Marine Park has officially reopened, offering a blend of conservation, research, and educational features. Located on Big Sister’s Island, the park now boasts Singapore’s first floating boardwalk, a dual-purpose structure that serves as both a coral habitat and research site. Other new highlights include a coastal forest trail for learning about coastal species, an upgraded lagoon tidal pool designed as an outdoor classroom, and a solar farm that brings the marine park to net-zero energy.
In an exciting first, the park is trialing mineral accretion technology to encourage coral growth by applying low-voltage electricity through CoralAID Mineral Accretion units. Visitors can view these underwater units near the floating boardwalk, where they stimulate the growth of hard corals. Additionally, the park has launched the second phase of the Comprehensive Marine Biodiversity Survey (CMBS II) with collaborators from NUS and the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. This phase will explore new habitats and employ advanced techniques to build a more comprehensive understanding of Singapore’s marine biodiversity.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Sisters’ Islands Marine Park continues to be a sanctuary for diverse marine life, spanning 40 hectares of coral reefs, sandy shores, and seagrass meadows. With the support of community partners like Ocean Network Express and Singtel, the park’s enhancements promise visitors a rich, hands-on experience while deepening public appreciation for Singapore’s unique marine ecosystems.
