The Keppel Coastal Trail at Labrador Nature Park officially opened to the public. Spanning 340 meters, the trail features a 90-meter wheelchair-accessible elevated boardwalk offering scenic views of the sea and a 250-meter path that winds through a coastal beach forest habitat. The development of the trail was made possible by a S$1 million (US$740,000) donation from the Keppel Care Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Keppel.
As part of the trail’s development, the coastal beach forest in the park underwent active restoration to strengthen its ecological resilience. According to a joint statement by the National Parks Board (NParks) and Keppel, the restoration serves as a vital physical and ecological buffer for the coastal hill forest within the nearby Labrador Nature Reserve, one of Singapore’s last remaining patches of such habitat. Visitors to the trail can spot wildlife such as the White-bellied Sea Eagle, Paradise Tree Snake, and Yellow-rumped Flycatcher, alongside about 100 species of trees and shrubs, including native coastal varieties that enhance food sources and shelter for animals.
During the opening ceremony, Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, Keppel representatives, volunteers, and community members planted 55 trees along the trail, contributing to Keppel’s 2020 pledge to plant 10,000 trees across Singapore’s parks and nature reserves with a S$3 million donation. By the end of 2024, approximately 8,000 trees from this pledge have been planted. Keppel Chairman Danny Teoh emphasised the trail’s role in preserving biodiversity and pledged Keppel’s continued support for addressing climate change through nature-based solutions.
