Inspired by the primordial relationship between food, fire and people, Tribal is a modern Asian grill that serves up an exploration of familiar cuisines kissed by the flame. Espousing communal spirit as its name suggests, Tribal is where diners with a shared appreciation for culinary diversity can immerse themselves in an inviting atmosphere designed by acclaimed Indonesian architect and eponymous firm, Andra Matin. Expect convivial gatherings over wood-fired sharing plates, hearty rice pots and a rotation of beef cuts carefully executed by Executive Chef Keith Wan and team, an equally bold cocktail programme and an impressive discovery of wines, serviced with warm hospitality.
The first of three Ebb & Flow Group concepts conceived as dining extensions of online grocer Modern Provision, the restaurant is slated to welcome its first diners from 29 December 2023 onwards.
Sited at ground level of Mondrian Singapore Duxton in proximity to buzzy Keong Saik Road and Tanjong Pagar locales, diners will find themselves in a rustic enclave aglow with warmth and ethnic vernacular upon entering. Brought to life by award-winning architecture firm, Andra Matin Studio and Indonesian weaving atelier, BYO Living, the interiors bear hallmarks of their contemporary traditional design, with an environmental sensitivity that befits Tribal’s ethos in Matin’s debut retail project in Singapore. Replicating a Southeast Asian charm, a palette of raw, earthy and neutral tones encapsulate the primary style of cooking. Complementing brick-tiled flooring and rattan walls, ceilings are draped with hand-woven rattan macrame and cut-work light fixtures that illuminate the space for an immersive experience.
With a seating capacity of up to 58 pax, diners will have the option of choosing bench seating for dates or smaller groups and a communal table at the centre for large gatherings. Overlooking tables is an open kitchen with counter seating, that enables diners to have a full view of kitchen theatrics and engage in curious conversations with Chef Keith and his team. Facilitating the transition from homely dining to spirited drinking, a walkway will connect Tribal to Slate, its cocktail counterpart that is scheduled to open in Q1of 2024.
Carrying through the idea of Asian-forward dishes that emphasise innate flavours with a rustic simplicity, the heart of Tribal’s menu lies at the proud use of intentional produce supplied by Modern Provision – the sibling concept that inspired Tribal and its upcoming counterparts, Slate and modprov. In their commitment to champion ethically sourced produce and support small-scale farmers, the team has scoured Asia for free-range cattle and poultry, and harvests that are grown with genuine care.
