Shan Cheng, home of authentic Ipoh flavours, has unveiled a refreshed new look at its CompassOne outlet, welcoming diners with an outlet-exclusive series of indulgent iced desserts. Among them is the trending Crème Brûlée Chendol from Ipoh, making its first-ever appearance in Singapore.
Four types of iced desserts serve up Shan Cheng’s dining philosophy of authentic Ipoh favourites elevated with generous doses of nostalgia. Take your pick from Snow Crunch Milo, White Coffee Mountain Ice, Chendol Legend or Golden Brulee Chendol, the last of which features a topping of crème brûlee that is all the rage in Ipoh, now made available in Singapore for the first time. They each spoon up a spin on the classic chendol and ice dessert, but dressed up with additions that every Singaporean will recognise from their childhood.
Founded by sisters Elaine and Cheryl Tioh, Shan Cheng draws its name from Ipoh’s renowned nickname: the “City of Mountains”. Growing up, they assisted their mother, a seasoned noodle seller, in preparing some of Ipoh’s most famed food offerings, which sharpened their palate for culinary excellence. After a decade-long stint in Singapore, the sisters yearned for the taste of home. In 2011, they decided to bring Ipoh’s culinary heritage to Singapore, sharing their mother’s time-tested recipes, honed over 30 years. They’ve since prided themselves to be well-loved by the local community for authentic Ipoh dishes, such as Shredded Chicken Hor Fun, Char Siew Hor Fun and Curry Noodles that are crafted using authentic ingredients sourced directly from Ipoh.

The malty chocolate energy drink of our childhood grows up and gets an adult spin with the Snow Crunch Milo. Milo-flavoured snow ice makes for a tantalising base, doused with white salted milk on top for creaminess and finished with generous dusting of Milo powder for that rich chocolatey taste. For extra indulgence, a side of Milo balls are served separately on the side, perfect to pop into the mouth on their own or added into the iced dessert for crunch.
Lovers of Ipoh’s white coffee will revel in the White Coffee Mountain Ice, a bowl of snow ice flavoured with Ipoh white coffee, added with white salted milk on top and finished with crushed biscuits. Emulating the silky creaminess of Ipoh’s famed white coffee is a side serving of frothy milk that you can sip on its own for incomparable texture or pour into the iced dessert to lend things a satiny mouthfeel.
Purists will appreciate the Chendol Legend, Shan Cheng’s own take on the classic chendol dessert. Shaved ice is poured over with gula melaka and coconut milk for the perfect caramelly balance of sweet and salty, setting the perfect stage for red beans, Nata de Coco and pandan jelly for bite.
If breaking convention is what you seek, the Golden Brulee Chendol has it all. On top of a shaved ice flavoured with the classic gula melaka and coconut milk, it is crowned with a serving of crème brûlee that is flambeed before your eyes upon serving. Sweet caramel milkiness lends an extra dimension to the red bean, Nata de Coco and pandan jelly within the bowl, presenting the perfect marriage of tradition and innovation.
