Kovan may not be the first neighbourhood that comes to mind for specialty coffee, but Puny Platypus is quietly changing that narrative. What began as a home-based passion project in a five-room Hougang flat has now expanded into a pocket-sized outpost at Promenade @ Pelikat. The new space is compact — two counter seats, a small indoor bench and a few camping chairs outside — but it carries the same intimate, personal energy that first drew regulars to its home setup.
Helmed by Zac Tan, formerly a full-time barista at Atlas Coffeehouse for eight years, Puny Platypus is rooted in experience and craft. After a brief stint outside the coffee industry, Zac returned to what he knows best: brewing thoughtful, well-executed cups. The menu spans espresso-based drinks, filter brews and ceremonial-grade matcha, but it is the specialty creations that stand out. The Cloud series, in particular, has become a calling card — the Mont Blanc layers iced black coffee with sea salt milk foam and a subtle orange zest aroma, while the Coco Matcha balances coconut water with matcha milk foam for a smooth, refreshing finish.
More than just a caffeine stop, Puny Platypus reflects Zac’s belief that coffee can be nuanced, expressive and approachable. From classic staples to inventive, cream-topped concoctions like the caffeine-forward Breakkie, the brand blends technical precision with playful creativity. In a residential corner better known for quiet living than café culture, this small but confident new addition feels like a neighbourhood gem in the making.
