Food Republic City Square Mall has recently undergone a revamp — explore its new design, which pays tribute to the bygone era of the ’80s! Reminiscent of a carpark, the interior is inspired by the open-air street hawker stalls (露天大排档) that used to dot Singapore between the 1970s and 1980s.
Stepping into the food court is like stepping back in time. From old-school advertising posters to bamboo blinds and concrete-textured walls, every element is carefully curated to capture the romance of the olden days. Additionally, the ceiling is painted with sky and cloud motifs to create an al fresco vibe. Keep your eyes peeled for the special-themed corners, where you can strike a pose and take many photos and reels for the ’gram! There are taxi service booths, complete with signs, carpark mirrors and roadside fences, a five-foot walkway and shophouse replicas for a great throwback to the ‘80s!
Naturally, the line-up of food stalls befits the oldie-is-goodie theme. The vendors are specially selected for their rich histories and indelible contributions to Singapore’s F&B scene. There is HJH Maimunah, a Michelin Bib Gourmand winner specialising in kampong-style Malay nasi padang since 1992. A highly recommended dish is the Tahu Telur. This traditional Indonesian dish features tofu that is battered with whisked egg, and then deep-fried to golden-brown perfection. Then, it is topped with a generous amount of peanut sauce and beansprouts.
There are also stalwarts such as Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodles, another Bib Gourmand winner. The stall has been using the same recipe since 1968. Its signature fish balls, fish cakes and fish dumplings are made purely with yellowtail fish, and by hand. Relish the firmness and bounce of its fish balls! Still craving for noodles? Sidle up to Thye Hong Hokkien Mee, whose namesake dish has stood the test of time since the 1970s. Wet and piping hot, the noodles are soused in an umami-packed gravy and accompanied with many succulent prawns and squid. At the City Square Mall outlet, the brand has specially revived its technique of serving the ingredients on opei leaves, which help to accentuate the aroma. Up the indulgence with the sambal chilli, which packs just the right amount of heat.
For a meat overload, go with Gaga Roasted Delights, which is known for its roasts with irresistible crackling and tender meat. At the City Square outlet, patrons will be treated to an exclusive dish: Tonic Herbal Chicken, featuring tender chunks of chicken immersed in a light yet nourishing broth.
Make your way to Quench, where you can indulge in its exclusive offering, the Ice Ball. This nostalgic shaved ice dessert is the perfect ice-cold treat to conclude your meal.
