Fernweh is a new café nestled within BEAT.1932 Hostel on South Bridge Road, bringing a breezy, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic to the heart of Chinatown. Its pastel, multicoloured façade makes it instantly recognisable, while the pet-friendly outdoor area and airy, mint-and-oak interiors offer a calming escape from the neighbourhood’s usual bustle. Power outlets and free Wi-Fi make it an easy pick for mid-day productivity, giving the space a relaxed, hostel-chic charm.
The menu blends café comfort with Asian influences, offering familiar flavours with a playful twist. Guests can expect brunch dishes such as Rendang Beef Benedict, Roti John French Toast and Kaya Crème Brûlée French Toast, alongside sharing plates like Cheesy Rendang Beef Spring Rolls, Mala Tofu Fries, Truffle Tater Tots and Wasabi Prawn Bao Sliders. Coffee starts at an accessible $4, with a selection of snacks and heartier mains including chilli crab pasta and beef rendang eggs benedict.
Desserts are a highlight at Fernweh, with the carrot cake and sesame tang yuan fritters standing out as must-tries—the latter combining black sesame ice cream, tang yuan and crunchy peanut bits for added texture. By evening, the café shifts into a cosy bar serving classics and quirky creations, including a boozy Milo cocktail. A thoughtful touch is the display of products from The Art Faculty, a social enterprise supporting artists on the autism spectrum, adding heart and purpose to this new Chinatown hideaway.
