After a decade at its iconic venue on Keong Saik Road, Potato Head Singapore has closed, making way for a new concept: 1939 Singapore. While the name has changed, much of the charm remains. The space is divided into four areas—The Front Porch, The Restaurant, Studio 1939, and The Rooftop—and features the familiar winding staircase, vintage knick-knacks, and vibrant hand-painted murals by Australian artist David Bromley. True to its tagline, “Same iconic venue, new name,” 1939 keeps the building’s whimsical and distinctive atmosphere intact.
The new menu blends local flavors with signature favorites, ensuring a mix of fresh offerings and familiar dishes. Highlights include prawn paste chicken served with a gingery chili dip, pork belly skewers paired with watermelon relish, and a deep-fried crab burger with a crisp exterior and airy center. Seafood options like beer-battered fish and fish tacos feature locally caught sea bass, while desserts include a classic apple pie wrapped in a flaky, buttery crust with spiced apple filling. The revamped menu offers a variety of flavors to cater to both loyal fans and new visitors.
The cocktail menu is equally creative, with drinks tailored to each section of the venue. The Restaurant focuses on timeless classics, while Studio 1939 offers bold, playful concoctions such as a laksa-inspired vodka cocktail and a refreshing gin-based blend with oolong and lychee. For those seeking a stronger drink, spirit-forward options balance intense flavors with fruity notes. The Rooftop provides a more relaxed atmosphere with tropical-inspired cocktails. Guests can also enjoy the lively ambiance of weekend DJ sessions, making 1939 a destination that merges familiar comfort with a fresh experience.
