A new chapter for Singapore’s independent film scene begins with the opening of SFS Somerset, a newly launched indie cinema housed within Hall 6 of Golden Village Cineleisure at Orchard. Operated by the Singapore Film Society, the city’s longest-established cultural film organisation, the space arrives as a welcome revival following the closure of The Projector in 2025. Opening in January 2026, SFS Somerset positions itself as a dedicated home for arthouse, independent, and Singaporean films that are rarely given extended theatrical runs.
Designed to be film-focused, friendly, and fuss-free, the 66-seat cinema champions quality storytelling from around the world while supporting collaborations with independent distributors and filmmakers. Its weekly programme is personally curated by SFS Chairman Kenneth Tan, ensuring a thoughtful and agile selection that responds closely to both audiences and the filmmaking community. The approach prioritises accessibility and intimacy, making cinema-going feel personal again.
SFS Somerset opened with the local feature The Old Man And His Car, the debut film by Singaporean filmmaker Michael Kam. Starring Lim Kay Tong alongside Richard Low, Sunny Pang, Kristin Tiara, and Wendy Zhuo, the film explores themes of memory, loss, and transition through the story of a widower preparing to part with his treasured vintage car. With its carefully curated screenings and clear focus on meaningful cinema, SFS Somerset offers a renewed space for film lovers seeking depth, discovery, and connection at the heart of Orchard Road.
