The House of Tan Yeok Nee at 101 Penang Road has recently reopened after an extensive four-year restoration, unveiling one of Singapore’s last remaining 19th-century Teochew mansions to the public for the first time. Standing at the edge of Orchard Road, opposite The Istana, the National Monument has been meticulously revived to showcase its gilded timber carvings, porcelain inlays and the architectural elegance that once defined Singapore’s Four Grand Mansions.
Reimagined by the Karim Family Foundation as a cultural and lifestyle destination, the landmark now features a Heritage Gallery, curated exhibitions, guided tours, and Loca Niru restaurant. Every detail of the restoration — from sourcing traditional craftsmen in Chaozhou to reinstating original 1800s design elements — reflects a deep commitment to preserving the mansion’s legacy while opening its doors to contemporary audiences.
The result is a living heritage space where history, architecture and community intersect. With its courtyards, central halls and conserved interiors, the House of Tan Yeok Nee once again becomes a gathering place for Singapore, offering a distinctive backdrop for cultural programmes, events, and future stories to unfold within one of the city’s most treasured icons.
