X3D Studio, a new virtual production studio, aims to position Singapore as a hub for high-tech film production. Located in a refurbished power station at 25 Pasir Panjang Road, the studio was co-founded by Ms. Karen Seah after an $8 million transformation. Spanning 40,000 square feet, it is the largest facility of its kind in Southeast Asia. It uses advanced virtual production technology seen in shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Queen Of Tears,” which allows for dynamic visual effects to be created in real-time, reducing costs and simplifying logistics.
Ms. Seah believes Singapore is well-positioned to lead in this emerging industry due to its advanced economy and technological expertise. X3D Studio’s innovative approach can save costs and minimize project complexity by enabling productions to be filmed entirely in-studio with changing digital backdrops. The studio has earned accreditation from Arri, a top studio equipment manufacturer, assuring clients of its high-quality production standards.
X3D Studio will demonstrate its capabilities with two upcoming sci-fi short films, “Dead End” and “Trap,” featuring local actors like Qi Yuwu and Oon Shu An. The studio aims to create 30 to 60 freelance jobs and develop local talent through training programs and partnerships, such as with Nanyang Polytechnic. Despite a current shortage of skilled professionals in Singapore, Ms. Seah is optimistic about building a strong talent pool, aided by her partner Myke Brown’s training experience in Vietnam and Thailand. The venue is also available for event rentals, expanding its utility and reach.
