Newly opened Ipoh Town Kopitiam brings Ipoh’s old-school delights through an exclusive collaboration with the famed Choy Kee Bakery Egg Tarts. Envisioned by two second-generation Ipoh sisters to share the cherished flavours of their childhood with Singapore.
Culture and heritage spring to life at Ipoh Town Kopitiam, the newest traditional kopitiam concept nestled within Jewel Changi Airport, honouring the renowned delicacies of the capital city of Perak, Malaysia. Conceptualized by a pair of sisters who grew up in Ipoh, where they assisted their mother in selling various traditional Ipoh cuisines in a market. Ipoh Town Kopitiam presents a menu drawn from the sisters’ fondest memories of growing up in Ipoh, Malaysia.
Bringing together their cherished flavours from Ipoh, scarcely found in Singapore, they aspire to share the authentic tastes of their hometown by introducing them to the city within the nostalgic ambiance of a kopitiam.
With the opening of its first outlet in Jewel, Ipoh Town Kopitiam also celebrates an exclusive collaboration with one of Ipoh’s renowned household brands, Choy Kee Bakery. Established in 1980, Choy Kee has since become well-known for their egg tarts and is constantly spotted with long queues in Ipoh. Their famed egg tarts are known to be loved and praised by many, including Hong Kong personalities like Hugo Leung Man To, Ella Koon, and more. This collaboration with Ipoh Town Kopitiam marks Choy Kee Bakery’s first venture outside its homeland.
Take a step back in time with local icons like Nasi Ayam Goreng Berempah, Malaysia’s national dish of coconut rice served with a whole chicken thigh fried to golden crunch bursting with the fragrance and aromas of over 10 different spices such as old ginger, lemongrass, coriander seed, cumin seed and more.
A quintessential breakfast staple from the olden days in Ipoh is the Fragrant Curry Toast With Soft Boiled Egg. Affectionately named Zhang Shang Ming Zhu, which translates to “a treasured jewel in the palm”, it aptly describes the topping of a soft boiled egg atop a fluffy, crispy toast infused with curry, for an extra dose of creamy protein. This breakfast icon is gradually becoming a rare find, even in Ipoh itself, where it is now only found in traditional coffeeshops.
Other key highlights include the Fried Turnip Cake, a treat rarely found in Singapore where carrot cake is abundant, as well as classic beverages like the Ipoh “Overjoy” White Coffee, brewed from a traditional recipe perfected by the sisters after scouring Ipoh and trying over 40 renditions.
